Engineers Without Borders Yemen began in 2018 with an initiative project directed by group of engineering specialists, experts, and consultants, with a group of pioneer engineers in Yemen to improve health services and child education for a community in Mahweet Governorate North-West Capital Sana'a through development of education and health facilities as recommended by the Humanitarian Aid Agencies working in Yemen. After a deep assessment and analysis to the community concerns, we realized that humanitarian projects are not designed to meet community need as truly needed by them. Although these projects reach their goals but don't achieve any impact or sustainability. There was no connection between community and their own resources with these projects.
From this point, the idea of humanitarian engineering has come and Engineers Without Borders - Yemen was officially founded in 2020, and the organization now encompasses hundreds of volunteering engineers and many of high-impact engineering projects across Yemen. An umbrella organization comprised of innovative ideas and practical solutions around Yemen, Engineers Without Borders Yemen works primarily to design sustainable infrastructure for underserved communities in Yemen. In the current crisis, Engineers Without Borders Yemen has worked to accelerate projects that provide clean water and support sanitation and hygiene to fragile communities, ensuring that they are still able to meet basic needs. We have worked to innovate ways for staff to work remotely, and to reinforce infrastructure for hospitals and schools in so they will be better providing services to communities, as well as to adopt for a humanitarian rehabilitation city to help effected people reintegration in their community. As they put it, “We’re engineers and finding solutions is what we do.”
